Advanced ZK Hardware Acceleration: The Technology Behind Aleo ASIC Miner

Inside the first production Aleo ZK ASIC miner.

1. Introduction

A high-performance ASIC mining machine for the Aleo project has recently entered the market — the GoldShell AE BOX small mining machine. GoldShell is a brand from Intchains Group. As a technology partner of Intchains, we have witnessed their long-standing support for technological innovation in privacy computing and AI. Zero-knowledge Proof (ZKP) technology has attracted widespread attention, requiring ongoing breakthroughs in both hardware and software — especially in performance acceleration.

This article explores the technology behind this ZK ASIC miner and the technology roadmap for future ZKVM + ASIC solutions.

2. Technical Innovation in Aleo Mainnet

As we introduced in this article: https://medium.com/@CFrontier_Labs/the-journey-toward-aleos-universal-zkvm-1df9114fbd86, the prover of Aleo mainnet is a kind of POW prover, which is to compute the puzzle of circuit Synthesis.

Synthesis is a crucial part of ZKP proving. Hardware acceleration of computations like MSM was already achieved in Aleo’s previous testnets. The Aleo team designed the mainnet this way specifically to encourage the community to accelerate the synthesis component.

According to the design, the prover needs to finish a lot of rounds of the R1CS circuit synthesis for a group of instruction sets of Aleo Varuna proving system. The witness will be used to construct a merkle tee, which can be converted to a proof target to compare with the difficulty target. The faster of the computation of circuit synthesis, the higher probability the prover can get the reward of a block.

3. Advanced Performance and ASIC Architecture of AE Box

Based on the AE BOX’s public specifications, here is its performance compared to the RTX 4090.

Performance comparison between AE BOX and RTX4090

The ASIC miner demonstrates 20x higher performance than a single RTX 4090, and more significantly, achieves 26x better energy efficiency compared to the RTX 4090 GPU.

The AE Box ASIC achieves its exceptional performance and energy efficiency through a hardware architecture comprising these key modules:

  1. CHU: Curve hash unit
  2. Decoder: Instruction decoder for processing Aleo operations
  3. EXU: The instruction execution unit
  4. Post processor: To generate the Merkle tree and get the proof target

The ASIC implementation provides substantial improvements over general-purpose computing solutions:

  • Significantly reduced power consumption per proof generation
  • Higher throughput for puzzle-proof generation
  • Specialized architecture optimized for Aleo’s the puzzle computation

4. Technical Evolution and Value Proposition

The development of ASIC technology for ZKP marks a crucial step in the blockchain industry. For Aleo specifically, hardware acceleration through ASICs delivers several key benefits:

  • Enhanced network security through increased proving capacity
  • Improved energy efficiency compared to general-purpose hardware like GPUs
  • Wider community recognition and decentralization as more individual provers join the ecosystem, thanks to the compact system design

Notably, according to Aleo’s proposal **ARC-0043: Extending the Puzzle to a Full SNARK,** the prover will finally support full SNARK proof generation. Furthermore, the prover will also be able to generate Aleo’s client-side proving-AVM prover.

The existing ASIC miner’s technology will serve as a solid foundation for Aleo’s future evolution. Additionally, through continuous iteration of Aleo’s ZK algorithms, ASIC companies like Intchains have accumulated valuable intellectual property (IP) in:

  • MSM (Multi-Scalar Multiplication) operations
  • NTT (Number Theoretic Transform) computations
  • Various Elliptic curve-based hash operators
  • ……

Looking ahead, ASIC miner vendors are expected to continue supporting Aleo’s infrastructure through technological upgrades.

Most significantly, the adoption of ASIC technology in the Aleo project will benefit the entire ZK industry, including projects like Ethereum beam chain that require real-time ZK proving.

5. Future Vision

It’s encouraging to see continuous progress in ZKP acceleration, particularly the ASIC adoption in the Aleo project. CF Labs is proud to have built a partnership with Intchains on ZK ASIC design. CF Labs stands at the forefront of hardware acceleration research in ZKP technology. We look forward to advancing the adoption of ZKVM + ASIC solutions to benefit the entire industry.
